History of the Chemical Dependency Treatment Program at
South Coast Medical Center

South Coast Medical Center in Laguna Beach opened its doors in 1959. It was the first hospital built in South Orange County. During the hospital’s “teenage years” it took a pioneering leap and opened the first Orange County hospital-based program for the treatment of Alcohol and Drug Addiction. The program was The Care Unit. The year was 1975.

In the early 1980’s the Care Unit moved its program to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Realizing the value of serving its community, South Coast Medical Center assumed ownership of the program and called it Genesis. The Care Unit and Genesis Programs have a rich history of offering outstanding treatment and have helped thousands of patients and their families begin the healing process of recovery from addictions.

August 21, 2006, Genesis evolved into Pacific Coast Recovery Center. The Genesis alumni and staff are honored and thrilled to participate in the enhanced traditional and holistic aspects of treatment that Pacific Coast Recovery Center offers. We are very grateful today to have such an outstanding treatment center.
